Happy childhood diaries

1963: It still rains a lot and I go swimming a lot.

16 Mar Saturday
Christopher had his first swimming lesson at the Cavendish school today and did very well.  But when he came out he was frezzing!  Mum send for the gas man today because the boiler was sounding a bit funny when it came on.  When the gas man had cleaned it he said that it was not dirty.  We had a nice dinner with a very tasty chicken.
17 Mar Sunday
C.M. and I cleaned the bike and we got 3d for it.  I made a very good bow.  It can shoot over the telephone wires.  I made one for Christopher and played Robin Hood.  But the fun all stopped when it began to pour.  We had a little hail as well.  We had cold chicken sandwiches for tea.
18 Mar Monday
In my Look and Learn I got a map of the world and it tells the longest rivers and lots of other things that you need to know about the world.  Dad came to meet us at the baths after work.  Mum can nearly dive but she still dos belly flops.
19 Mar Tuesday
When I came home from school I found out that Christopher had got into a mess with mum’s lipstick.  Mum and dad went to school to see my books and to see how I was getting on.  They took my report as well so that they could discuss it with Mrs. Lardi.  We went next door and John lent us two books.
20 Mar Wednesday
Mum went to London to look at the shops there she went down Oxford Street and came back worn out.  Christopher had to go to Mrs Summers house to wait for her to come back.  At my swimming lesson I dived three times off the top board; the first time I was a bit frightened and when I hit the water my head felt like a hammer had hit it, but the second time it was much better and the third time it was even worse than the first.
21 Mar Thursday
Mum has been in a temper all day and when I came home she made me do my homework straight away.  Yesterday I received a letter from Nanna, it had got two shillings in it.  For Christopher and I to share, we each had a shilling.  At lunch time I saw Dad on his bike going back to work, he gave me some sweets.
22 Mar Friday
To-day I took three shillings to school to get some tickets for the play on the second and third of April but when I got there all the tickets for the second of April had been sold so I had to get some of the third of April.
23 Mar Saturday
Christopher went swimming today again.  We went out for tea at Uncle Ken’s and we came home in his car because he wanted to take some wood to a friend and he could not get it in his car so he lent ours.  We also went to Aunty Audrey’s.
24 Mar Sunday
At 8 o’clock in the morning Dad said we were going to Shirebrook so off we went we still had Uncle Ken’s car so we went in that.  First we saw Aunty Dot then we saw Nanna Burton and Uncle Mick and we got at nanna’s we found that we had got there before Aunty Audrey.  It was a lovely day, but when we were coming back some rubber came off the back wheel.
25 Mar Monday
On the front of this week’s Look and Learn there was a picture of a pillory so I made one.  First you have some cardboard, a roll of sellotape and some sicoress and some wire to make it.  Then you got some of the cardboard and rolled it into a sort of column then you cut it in half and put some card at the top with a hinge of wire.
26 Mar Tuesday
To-day in history we learnt about bad King John and Robin Hood.  So I took home my history book to finish off what I had done, for home work.  I saw Dad two times at play time and he gave me some sweets.  I mad another pillory, it was the same as the one I made yesterday but smaller.

29 Mar Friday
To-day I had a day off from school.  The weather was not very nice because it rained nearly all the morning and snowed.  We went to Boniface’s for coffee.  After dinner we went round to the Totman’s house for a chat.  I went up with John in the loft and he gave me a stone-thrower.  Christopher went to the exhibition despite the weather.
